Architectural Research Consultants, Incorporated (ARC) headed a team composed of planners, economists, engineers and transportation planners that prepared a comprehensive plan for Los Alamos County, New Mexico.

Los Alamos County is unique for being the youngest, most affluent and highly educated, yet smallest county in area in the state. Possessed of stunning natural beauty, the county’s land ownership pattern and geography limit future development options.

This 18-month planning project was truly comprehensive in scope. The planning team headed by ARC prepared element plans for land use, housing, natural and man-made conditions, historic background, transportation, public facilities and commerce and industry. Area and district plans were prepared for the downtown area, White Rock and two presently undeveloped properties of 120 and 900 acres, respectively. A succinct policy volume provides day-to-day planning guidance.

The Los Alamos Comprehensive Plan was recognized as the most outstanding comprehensive planning effort in the state in 1988 by the New Mexico Chapter of the American Planning Association.
